Every actor will eventually face the unique demands of an action scene, often one that includes weaponry. Such opportunities dynamically define character and story, providing the actor commands the skills necessary to create and deliver a safe, exciting performance. Action in film and television is here to stay.
ACTING ACTION is structured to prepare the body, inspire the mind and develop the tools to connect great ideas with superior execution. Both the beginning actor and the experienced veteran will learn professional level skills and techniques that get the job done with security and style.
ACTING ACTION is designed to develop a strong central core of balance from which the actor can tell his or her story with safety, precision and consistency. It incorporates both unarmed techniques (slaps, punches, falls, grabs, escapes, reversals) and weaponry (sword, rapier & dagger, broadsword, stick, knife) to develop the following skills:
Cultivate Balance, Safety and a Sensitivity to your partner's energy. Hone basic physical skills to enable each actor to achieve a higher and more dynamic level of performance. Increase marketable skills by developing greater Poise, Balance and Confidence. Increase Strength and Flexibility. Develop Relaxation and Awareness. Connect both Body and Intellect into one powerful unit of expression. Develop camera and character awareness so the actor can tell his/her story.

Creating the Illusion of Power

As performers, we are Storytellers and Problem Solvers. We are telling a story. That is the most important thing to remember, always. Every action choice must define your character and advance the story. We are taking advantage of the creative opportunity an action sequence offers the trained actor. You must discover, then believably execute the most effective, dynamic and exciting story ideas you can imagine.
An audience forms instant judgements about characters and story based on what they see. Appearances can be deceiving, i.e., misinterpreted or manipulated to suit the needs of the story. The actor must guide the audience as a whole while encouraging each individual to become involved in the story and its characters. Each viewer will then supply the uniquely individual interpretations that are most personal and powerful to them.
Never stop learning. When an opportunity presents itself you must be ready. Your Performance will be limited by the skills you possess at that moment. Remember, your Choices are what make you Unique, the Art in is your Choices.
This is an Acting Class, not a Stunt Class. We leave the high risk hazards to the professionals who have undergone the specialized training necessary to accept the genuine dangers involved in professional stunt work.
