FEARLESS

Anthony fights Jet Li Anthony received Jet's sword

In 2005, Anthony flew to China to perform in his first non-English language film - FEARLESS starring Jet Li. The film is the story of the legendary Chinese martial artist Huo Yuanjia who took on 4 foreign fighters to defend the martial pride of China in the early 20th century.

Anthony portrays a Spanish sabre fencer who fights against Yuanjia, who uses a Chinese gim. Both actors met on the set and, without any additional rehearsal, immediately began filming. The weapons were both made of wood to keep them light and fast - which also meant they had to be especially careful to not break them. The fight moves through several phrases during which Anthony' gets slashed across his chest protector. However, his is not a "bad guy" and survives the fight - receiving a gift of the gim from Yuanjia. In reality, Anthony did receive a gift of both the weapons used in the film from Jet Li, and in return gifted Jet with an aluminum sabre matching the style of that used in the film.

FEARLESS was directed by Ronny Yu and choreographed by the legendary Yuen Woo Ping. It has an anticipated February 2006 release in China and worldwide release in March or April of 2006. To read an excerpt of Anthony's China diary, visit Anthony's News Page.

SECONDHAND LIONS

Anthony, Chris and the fight team Anthony in Arab costume Anthony and Ringo

In 2002, Anthony was called upon by Stunt Coordinator Walter Scott to choreograph the swordplay for the feature Secondhand Lions. The film, starring Robert Duvall, Michael Caine and Haley Joel Osment as two crazy great-uncles and a down-and-out grandnephew in 1960s Texas, features Technicolor flashbacks of the two men as adventurers in their youth. These swashbuckling flashbacks are full of swordplay and fights choreographed by Anthony and performed by him, his fight team, and actor Christian Kane, who stars as the young Duvall...er, "Hub" (left photo).

As part of the filming, Anthony was called upon more than once to perform as a combatant in the film, including dressing as an Arab in the marketplace (center photo). But he did get the occasional break from the set to work with the horses, especially since some of the fights were to occur on horseback. Here, Anthony takes a break from working with Ringo to show how much he enjoys the work. Secondhand Lions was written and directed by Tim McCanlies, the screenwriter of the animated feature Iron Giant.

It was a chance for Anthony to play the good guy for a change. Tarak is not only skilled in the ways of the warrior, he is also a priest with magical talents (lower left), and devoted protector of the princess (lower right).

Produced by North American Pictures, ARIANA'S QUEST is also a pilot for a possible television series. A second feature on the continuing adventures of Ariana is under production. More news about both will be published as it becomes available.

In the film, Rainman kills fellow agent John Mackie (played by Dirk Benedict who he had worked with years earlier on Battlestar Galactica) and then pursues Mackie's girlfriend Jennifer (Paige Turco) to retrieve a computer disk.

The film has a sequence with Rainman in a dojo (photo at left) that features Anthony's whip prowess with a whip snuffing out candles, including one behind him. Center and right photos show Rainman during his hunt to kill Paige.

BATMAN RETURNS

In 1991, Anthony was hired as whip trainer for Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns. After a demonstration of his technique, director Tim Burton was convinced that the bullwhip was THE weapon for Catwoman. Anthony's teaching paid off for Ms. Pfeiffer - her whipcracking skill made her character completely unforgettable.

At her insistence, Anthony was always on the set when there was any action with the whip, including the department store (left) and Gotham City rooftop (middle). He also dressed as one of the Penguin's terror clowns and a hotdog vendor (right). All photos property of Warner Brothers.

ROAD HOUSE

In 1989, Anthony co-starred as Ketchum in one of the quintessential "man" movies - Road House. In the film, Anthony plays a "henchman" of town baddie, Brad Wesley (played by Ben Gazzara). Anthony's skills as a martial artist allowed him to perform all his fights with Dalton, played by Patrick Swayze (left). His character not only drove the huge truck "Big Foot" over the car lot (center), but also had a climactic fight with Swayze after stalking him with a shotgun (right).

Anthony also had one additional scene that was cut from the final print--the one in which he kills Dalton's best friend, Wade Garrett, played by Sam Elliott. Production photos are property of United Artists

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

For Golan-Globus' productionMasters of the Universe, Anthony had to make a sacrifice - his hair. To play the role of "Blade," Anthony shaved his head every day on the way to location. The film was the first time Anthony worked with Robert Duncan McNeill ("Kevin Corrigan", right photo), who he would work with years later on Star Trek: Voyager. At left in the photo is Loren Janes, Swordmaster for the film, although Anthony trained Dolph Lundgren. Janes was Steve McQueen's stunt double for many years and stunt coordinator on the MacGuyver episode "The Assassin," in which Anthony guest-starred. The film also starred Courtney Cox, who would go on to fame and fortune in the hit series Friends.

In one of the film's final sequences, "He-Man" (Dolph Lundgren) is whipped by Blade with a lightwhip that was actually painted onto the film (lower left). While the artists had film of Anthony throwing a whip, he actually only held the handle while shooting with Lundgren. Photo at lower right shows "Blade" with "Evilynn", played by Meg Foster.

STARCHASER: THE LEGEND OF ORIN

Evil Overlord Zygon

Although not well-known, Starchaser: The Legend of Orin is a landmark animated full-length feature - the first done in 3-D. For the feature, Anthony not only supplied the voice of Zygon, the cruel ruler of a far-off universe where the machines are taking over control, but he also was the model for the character (drawing above). The artist, Louise Zingarelli, was also among the artists who created the big-budget animated feature, Titan: AE.

The Warrior and the Sorceress took Anthony to Argentina to work again with David Carradine. Actually a remake of Yojimbo, the story revolves around two warring factions fighting over control of the town's only well. Photos from the top are from the fight melee around the well.

Photos at the bottom are from the climactic fight between Kief (Anthony) and Kain (Carradine). Although Carradine is right-handed, he had to fight with his left. The black "glove" on his right hand is a cast--an accident during the filming broke his hand, forcing the change.

THE SWORD AND THE SORCEROR

Anthony as Rodrigo

In 1982, Anthony co-starred in the movie that put the fantasy/adventure genre on the map. Starring Lee Horsley and Simon MacCorkindale, the film was a great hit. In the film, Anthony played the reluctant Rodrigo (photo at left), who unites with the men under the leadership of Prince Talen (Horsley) and, in the end fights like a hero, despite his fears, to help rescue his leader, Prince Mikah (a pained Simon MacCorkindale - upper right photo).

It was also the first time for a film that Anthony fought with a sword (until this film, his swordplay had been limited to the stage) and rode a horse (lower left) . Unlike many of his other films, this one was filmed in and around Los Angeles - in fact, the cave sequences (lower right) were shot at Bronson Caves in Hollywood.

The film culminates in a complex fight between Anthony and Joe (bottom left) that takes place on top of an old, crumbling Spanish castle. Anthony and Joe were joined on the set by Al Dacoscas, father of actor Mark Dacoscas who would later work with Anthony at Universal Studios Tour in Los Angeles. In the Tour's "Conan Sword Spectacular," for which Anthony was Sword Master and Choreographer, Mark played the young Conan.
